About Tyto longimembris (Jerdon, 1839)
The eastern grass owl, with the scientific name Tyto longimembris (Jerdon, 1839), is a medium-sized owl that is similar in size to the barn owl. Adult males measure 32 to 38 cm (13 to 15 in) in length, while larger females measure 35 to 42 cm (14 to 17 in). The species has a wingspan ranging from 100 to 116 cm (39 to 46 in). Females weigh around 460 g (16 oz), while males weigh around 400 g (14 oz). Its upperparts are dark brown or tan with pale spots, its wings have black and tan bars, and it has a very pale beak, feathered legs, and dark brown eyes. Like all owls in the Tyto genus, it has a heart-shaped facial disk that is brown-buff with a white border. The eastern grass owl prefers habitats of tall grasslands and swamps. It roosts in flattened vegetation within tunnel systems formed through the swamp vegetation, and it also nests in similar locations. This species is distributed across eastern, southern, and southeast Asia, parts of New Guinea, the Philippines, Australia (mainly Queensland), and the western Pacific.
