About Tylopilus rubrobrunneus Mazzer & A.H.Sm.

Tylopilus rubrobrunneus Mazzer & A.H.Sm., commonly called the reddish brown bitter bolete, is a bolete fungus that belongs to the family Boletaceae. It was first scientifically described in 1967 by Samuel J. Mazzer and Alexander H. Smith, using collections that were gathered in Michigan. In 2010, this bolete was reported growing in a Mexican beech (Fagus mexicana) forest in Hidalgo, Mexico. The cap of this fungus measures 5โ€“13 centimeters (2โ€“5 inches) wide. Its stem reaches 7โ€“13 cm tall and is 1.5โ€“3 cm thick. The flesh is white, can bruise yellowish when damaged, and has a very bitter taste. The spore print of Tylopilus rubrobrunneus is pinkish brown. This species can be found growing under beech and oak trees in eastern North America between July and September. Tylopilus rubrobrunneus is classified as inedible.
