About Tursiops erebennus (Cope, 1865)

Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin, with the scientific name Tursiops erebennus (Cope, 1865), is a species of bottlenose dolphin that lives in coastal waters of the eastern United States. This species was formerly classified as a nearshore variant of the common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus. The full distribution range of Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin has not yet been confirmed. Confirmed habitat of the species is nearshore coastal waters, including bays and estuaries, along the eastern United States from New York to Florida. Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin is genetically related to coastal bottlenose dolphin populations in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, and it may also live in these waters. More research is needed to confirm whether the coastal bottlenose dolphin populations in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are actually Tamanend's bottlenose dolphin.
