About Turdus boulboul (Latham, 1790)

The grey-winged blackbird, scientifically named Turdus boulboul, is a species of the genus Turdus in the thrush family. It occurs in the mountains of southern and eastern Asia, ranging from the Himalayas to northern Vietnam. Its natural habitat is located at middle altitudes in subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. Most individuals are found between 1800 and 2700 m above sea level, but in winter they occasionally descend as low as 1200 m, and in summer they can reach altitudes as high as 3300 m. This is a large thrush, measuring 28–29 cm in length and weighing 88–111 g. It shows distinct sexual dimorphism in its plumage. Males are black with faint pale fringes on the belly, and have a broad grey patch covering the wing covert, secondary, and tertial feathers. This patch is somewhat similar to the marking seen on a ring ouzel, but is more uniformly grey. Females are plain brown, with only a faint paler brown marking on the wings in the same area where males have their grey patch. Males have a bright yellow bill, while females have a dull yellow to brownish bill. Both sexes have a narrow eye ring, which is yellow in males and greyish in females.
