About Turbo sazae H.Fukuda, 2017
Turbo sazae, which is called sazae (サザエ) in Japanese, is a species of sea snail. It is a marine gastropod mollusk that belongs to Turbinidae, the family of turban snails. Although the species is commonly eaten in Japan, it was long confused with Turbo cornutus and Turbo japonicus, until the confusion was resolved when Fukuda described it as a separate species in 2017.
This species is distributed in South Korea and Japan.
In Japan, sazae is valued as a culinary delicacy. After the snail is cooked, it can be pulled out of its shell by its hard operculum — a hard, rocky lid that the snail is firmly attached to. The operculum itself is not edible, and it must be discarded together with the snail's shell after eating.
