Gold tegus, scientifically named Tupinambis teguixin (Linnaeus, 1758), grow to an average length of 2 to 3 feet (60 to 100 cm), and reach an average weight of up to 3.5 to 4.0 kg. They have a glossy body, powerful limbs, a thick tail, and many black and gold stripes running along the length of their bodies. Gold tegus inhabit the tropical forests of northern and central South America, and also live in Panama. Their South American distribution extends to the island of Trinidad.
