About Tubuca dussumieri (H.Milne Edwards, 1852)
Tubuca dussumieri (H.Milne Edwards, 1852) is a crab species with distinct sexually dimorphic claws. Males have one significantly larger claw and one smaller claw, while females have two smaller, equal-sized claws. This species has a blue-black carapace that reaches a maximum width of approximately 33 mm. A male’s larger claw has coloration split between its lower and upper halves: the lower half is red or orange, and the upper half is white to yellow. The wrist of this claw bears granules, and a gutter runs along the lower portion of the claw. In Australia, Tubuca dussumieri can be distinguished from the related species Tubuca coarctata by several traits. For Tubuca dussumieri, the upper movable claw finger is white or yellowish-white, the lower claw finger is mostly orange, and the claw wrist (manus) is blue-grey. It also has two grooves on the upper claw, rather than the single groove found in Tubuca coarctata. Tubuca dussumieri was formerly classified within the genus Uca. In 2016, it was reclassified into the genus Tubuca, which was previously a subgenus of Uca.
