This species is native to Cuba, nearby islands including Cayos de San Felipe (specifically Cayo Real), and Isla de la Juventud. Its documented type locality is "l'île de Cuba." The preferred natural habitat of Tropidophis melanurus is forest. The reproductive mode of this species is not confirmed; it has been reported both as oviparous and ovoviviparous.
