About Tropidia scita (Harris, 1780)

This species is scientifically named Tropidia scita (Harris, 1780). For external morphological terminology, see Morphology of Diptera. Adults have a wing length ranging from 5.5 to 8.25 millimetres, or 0.217 to 0.325 inches. Vein R4+5 dips only slightly into the underlying cell. The dorsal surface of the thorax is shining black, with some lightly dusted areas. The second and third abdominal tergites are yellow or orange, each marked with a black median stripe. Antennae are dark, appearing brown or black. The hind femora are swollen and curved. Refer to cited references for species determination. This species is distributed across the Palearctic realm. Its range extends from Fennoscandia south to central France, eastward from Ireland through Central Europe, then across Russia, the Caucasus, into Siberia and the Russian Far East. It is also found in Japan and Formosa.
