About Troides magellanus (Felder & Felder, 1862)
This species, Troides magellanus (Felder & Felder, 1862), shows strong sexual dimorphism between males and females. For males: the forewings have a black ground color, with veins bordered by white. The underside of the forewings is very similar to the upperside, except some veins are bordered by yellow instead. Male hindwings are golden yellow, with black veins and a black marginal edge. At a certain viewing angle, the golden area of the hindwings displays an opal, green, or blue iridescent color. The underside of the male hindwing matches the upperside, and also has this same optical effect. The male abdomen is yellowish overall, while its underside is yellow; the head and thorax are black. Females are larger than males. The female's ground color ranges from dark brown to black, with veins bordered by shaded white markings. Female hindwings have a golden area marked with dark veins, and a postdiscal chain of golden spots along the edge. The underside of the female's wings matches the upperside. The species is distributed in the Philippines on Batan Island, Babuyan Island, Luzon, Polillo, Marinduque, Cuyo Island, Samar, Cebu, Leyte, Bohol, and Mindanao; in Taiwan, it is found only on Orchid Island.
