About Tripterygion tartessicum Carreras-Carbonell, Pascual & Macpherson, 2007
Tripterygion tartessicum is a fish species that belongs to the family Tripterygiidae, commonly known as threefin blennies. This species has a widespread distribution across the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic Ocean, where it occurs along the southern coast of Spain and along the coast from Morocco to Tunisia. It is a tropical demersal fish that can reach a maximum length of 7.7 centimetres, or 3.0 inches. The species was formally described in 2007, after specimens previously identified as the red-black triplefin Tripterygion tripteronotum were recognized as belonging to this new distinct species. The species' specific name refers to the semi-mythical city of Tartessos and the associated Tartessian culture, which was located in southern Spain within the geographic range of this fish.
