About Tripterygion melanurum Guichenot, 1850

Tripterygion melanurum has an average body size of 4.3 centimetres (1.7 inches), with some individuals growing up to 5.3 centimetres (2.1 inches). All individuals of this species are permanently red. Females and non-territorial males of the species have a marbled head. In contrast, territorial males have a black head and a slightly darker overall body color. They typically have vertical bars and white spots across their back, and also have longer rays in their second dorsal fin.
