About Trillium flexipes Raf.

Trillium flexipes Raf. is a perennial herbaceous plant that spreads via underground rhizomes. In northern populations, its flower typically hangs below the leaves, while central and southern populations produce a large, erect flower. The flower petals are usually white, but may also be reddish or maroon. When ripe, the fruit ranges from rosy red to purplish and is fragrant. This species is known to hybridize with other Trillium species. Hybrids between Trillium flexipes and Trillium erectum are confirmed to occur; red-petaled forms of Trillium flexipes tend to grow in areas where the ranges of these two species overlap. Hybridization between Trillium flexipes and Trillium sulcatum is also suspected.
