About Trifolium campestre Schreb.

Trifolium campestre Schreb. is a herbaceous annual plant that grows 10–30 cm tall. It produces distinctive yellow flowerheads that superficially resemble the flowers of hop. Each flowerhead is a cylindrical or spherical cluster holding 20–40 individual flowers. As the flowers age and dry, they turn brown and enclose the fruit, which is a one-seeded pod. Its leaves are alternate and trifoliate, with three oblong or elliptical leaflets that measure 4–10 mm long. This species is very closely related to large hop trefoil, Trifolium aureum. In agriculture, hop trefoil is an important clover because its foliage works well for feeding livestock and replenishing soil. It is not generally planted intentionally, but it is considered a valuable herb when it grows naturally in pastures. It has become naturalized in North America, especially in the western and southern parts of the continent.
