The hairy-backed bulbul, with the scientific name Tricholestes criniger (Blyth, 1845), is a small bulbul species. It measures 16–17 cm in length and weighs 12–21 g, and is relatively quiet. It has a slightly rounded tail and strong rictal bristles. Its upper body is olive, and its underparts are yellowish. Distinctive features include pale yellowish lores, a broad eye ring, a dark rufescent olive-brown cap and neck, olive-rufous uppertail-coverts and upperwings, and a bright rufous-brown tail with creamy white tips. It has a creamy white chin and throat that blends into a yellow breast, plus often-concealed hair-like filoplumes on its back. It has small, weak legs and feet, a dark brown iris, a light blue-grey bill, and pale greenish-brown legs. The sexes look similar, though females are slightly smaller. Juveniles have a grey-brown iris and pale fleshy pink legs. The subspecies sericeus is larger than the nominate form, and has duller yellow undertail-coverts. Subspecies viridis is similar to the nominate, but has brighter colored upperparts.
