About Trichoglossus haematodus (Linnaeus, 1771)
The coconut lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus, measures 25–30 cm (10–12 in) in length and weighs around 109–137 g (3.8–4.8 oz). It has an orange-red bill, a dark blue head that fades to brown at the neck, a yellow collar, and green upperparts. Its breast is red with blue-black barring, and its belly is green with yellow barring. The upper surface of its tail is green, while the underside is barred in green and yellow. Males have bright red irises, while females have orange-red irises. This species is found in eastern Indonesia, specifically on Buru, Seram, Misool, Waigeo, Numfoor, Yapen, and the Aru Islands. It also occurs on New Guinea (shared by Indonesia and Papua New Guinea), the Bismarck Archipelago, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. It occupies a wide range of lowland and wooded hill habitats, including mangroves, rainforest, nypa forest, swamps, savanna, and woodland. It also lives in human-modified areas such as coconut plantations, gardens, agricultural land, and disturbed forest. It occurs from sea level up to 2,440 m (8,010 ft), and this upper altitude limit varies by location.
