About Treron calvus (Temminck, 1811)
The African green pigeon, with the scientific name Treron calvus (Temminck, 1811), is described and broken into recognized subspecies below. Adult African green pigeons have maroon patches on the tops of their wings, while juveniles have an olive color in this area. The upperparts of their bodies are grayish-green to yellowish-green, their thighs are yellow, and their feet and bill are red, with the bill having a white tip. The currently recognized subspecies of Treron calvus and their respective ranges are as follows: T. c. calvus ranges from eastern Nigeria to northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and central Angola; T. c. virescens is found on Principe Island in the Gulf of Guinea; T. c. sharpei ranges from Sierra Leone to south Nigeria and north Cameroon; T. c. nudirostris ranges from Senegal to Gambia and Guinea-Bissau; T. c. poensis is found on Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea; T. c. uellensis is found in South Sudan, northern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda; T. c. brevicera ranges from Southwest Ethiopia to north Tanzania east of the Rift Valley, excluding the coast; T. c. salvadorii is found in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southwestern Tanzania, Zambia, northern Malawi, and Mozambique; T. c. wakefieldii is found in coastal Kenya and northeastern Tanzania; T. c. schalowi is found in eastern Angola, northeastern Namibia, northern Botswana, and northwestern Zimbabwe; T. c. ansorgei is found in West Angola, south of the Cuanza River; T. c. vylderi is found in Northwest Namibia, east to Grootfontein; T. c. gibberifrons ranges from southeastern South Sudan south to the Lake Victoria Basin in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, western Kenya, and northwestern Tanzania; undescribed forms corresponding to delalandii, glaucus, or orientalis are found along the coast from southeastern Tanzania south to Eastern Cape Province, South Africa; T. c. granti is found in the lowlands of east Tanzania and Zanzibar. Across the entire species, African green pigeons may occur and breed in high densities, but they are prone to regular local movements. The full species range covers Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
