About Trentepohlia aurea (L.) C.F.P.Martius
Trentepohlia aurea forms small, bushy tufts that range in color from golden yellow to orange-brown; dried specimens have a duller color. Its thallus is made up of a group of erect filaments that grow from a reduced system of prostrate filaments. Erect filaments reach up to 1.5 mm in height, and can be unbranched, or branched sparsely to densely. These erect filaments are composed of cylindrical cells 10–20 micrometers wide (rarely up to 30 micrometers wide), with cell lengths 1.5 to 4 times their width. Prostrate filaments have swollen cells that reach up to 18 micrometers wide. This species produces gametangia that are globular, ovoid, or flask-shaped, and measure 18–40 micrometers wide. Its zoosporangia are 25–30 micrometers wide and 27–40 micrometers long.
