About Trametes hirsuta (Wulfen) Lloyd
The cap of Trametes hirsuta grows up to 15 centimetres (6 in) wide, and can reach an exceptional maximum width of 30 cm. The cap surface is whitish gray, covered with short hairs and marked with subtle zoning; it may sometimes be tomentose, and take on a yellowish or darker coloration near the margin. The flesh is tough, growing up to 5 millimetres (1โ4 in) thick. It has a soft gray upper layer and a whitish lower layer, separated by a black plane. This fungus is too tough to be eaten. Ecologically, Trametes hirsuta grows on dead wood from deciduous trees, and is especially common on beechwood. It can be found year-round, and persists through all seasons thanks to its leathery texture.
