About Trachemys venusta (Gray, 1855)
The Meso-American slider, scientifically named Trachemys venusta (Gray, 1855), is a turtle species that belongs to the family Emydidae. Its overall geographic distribution extends from southeastern Mexico to northwestern Colombia. Six recognized subspecies of Trachemys venusta have the following ranges: The nominate subspecies Trachemys venusta venusta occurs in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, and Yucatán. Trachemys venusta cataspila is found in the Mexican states of San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz. Trachemys venusta grayi lives in El Salvador, Guatemala, and the Mexican states of Chiapas and Oaxaca. Three additional subspecies were first described in 2010: Trachemys venusta iversoni, which occurs in the Mexican state of Yucatán; Trachemys venusta panamensis, which is found in Panama; and Trachemys venusta uhrigi, which ranges across Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and the Colombian departments of Antioquia and Chocó.
