About Toxicoscordion fremontii (Torr.) Rydb.
Toxicoscordion fremontii, commonly called common star lily, Frémont's deathcamas, or star zigadene, is an attractive wildflower. It grows on grassy or woody slopes, or rocky outcrops, across many lower-lying regions of California, southwestern Oregon, and northern Baja California. Like other deathcamases, this species grows from a roughly spherical bulb that is 20 to 35 millimeters in diameter. Its leaves grow from the base of the plant. While leaves can reach up to half a meter in length, they are typically only half that maximum length. Flowers bloom between March and June, and grow in clusters. Each flower has six petal-like structures: strictly speaking, these are three actual petals and three very similar-looking sepals, arranged symmetrically. This symmetric arrangement gives the plant the common name star-lily. Individual flowers measure 1 to 4 centimeters across.
