About Toxicodendron orientale Greene

Toxicodendron orientale (Greene) is a climbing vine that grows on trees and other supporting structures. This species has deciduous trifoliate leaves that reach 3–10 centimetres (1+1⁄4–4 inches) in length. Young branches are covered with small brown hairs, which develop into red lenticels as the branches mature. T. orientale flowers between May and June; its small yellow-green flowers grow in clusters from leaf axils. The flowers ripen into yellow-brown fruit between August and September. This plant grows naturally in Sakhalin, Japan, Taiwan, south-central China, and South Korea, and has been introduced to parts of Uzbekistan. All parts of Toxicodendron orientale contain urushiol, a compound that causes severe contact dermatitis in humans.
