About Tivela stultorum (Mawe, 1823)

Tivela stultorum, commonly called the Pismo clam, is a species of large, edible saltwater clam. It is a marine bivalve mollusk that belongs to Veneridae, the Venus clam family. This species is native to the eastern Pacific Ocean. As its common name suggests, the Pismo clam occurs at Pismo Beach, California. Its range extends at least as far south as 480 km (300 miles) south of the US–Mexico border, on the Pacific Ocean side of Baja California. In this southern area, strong surf sometimes washes live clams ashore. Indigenous peoples of California used this species as food.
