About Tityus obscurus (Gervais, 1843)

Description and behavior: Tityus obscurus is one of the largest species in the Tityus genus, reaching a total length of 65 to 100 mm. Adult individuals are characterized by a solid black body, a flattened body shape, flattened legs, and relatively thin claws. This species is terrestrial and nocturnal. During the daytime, it hides under stones, fallen logs, or loose bark. It emerges at night to hunt for prey, which primarily consists of insects and other arthropods. Juvenile Tityus obscurus have brown bodies and darkened appendages. Range and habitat: Tityus obscurus occurs in tropical and subtropical forests across northern South America, and is mainly found in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil, French Guiana, and Suriname.
