About Tiphia femorata Fabricius, 1775
Tiphia femorata, first formally described by Fabricius in 1775, has an adult size range that differs between sexes. Adult males of this species grow to between 5 and 12 millimeters (0.20 to 0.47 inches) long, while adult females reach lengths of 5 to 15 millimeters (0.20 to 0.59 inches). The entire body of Tiphia femorata is black and covered in light-colored hairs. The tibiae and femora of the middle and hind leg pairs are reddish brown. Two species that look rather similar to Tiphia femorata are Tiphia minuta and Tiphia unicolor. This species can be found across most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, and North Africa. It primarily lives in warmer, dry, and semi-arid grasslands and meadows.
