The puna tinamou has the scientific name Tinamotis pentlandii Vigors, 1837. This species reaches approximately 41 centimeters, or 16 inches, in total length. Its upper body is brown with white spots, its breast is blue-grey, its belly is rufous, and its head is white marked with black streaks. It lives in high-altitude grassland in subtropical and tropical regions, and occupies brushland at the same altitudes to a lesser extent. It occurs at altitudes between 4,000 and 4,700 meters, which is 13,100 to 15,400 feet. Its natural range covers Peru, northern Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina.
