About Tidestromia suffruticosa (Torr.) Standl.
Tidestromia suffruticosa, commonly known as shrubby honeysweet, is a perennial plant species belonging to the family Amaranthaceae. It is native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northeastern Mexico. This species has one of the highest recorded photosynthesis rates of any plant. It produces flowers from April through December each year. Tidestromia suffruticosa is able to survive very high temperatures, and can grow successfully in extreme environments including Death Valley. Researchers are currently studying the genetic basis of this plant's heat tolerance, with the goal of developing hardier crop varieties that can better adapt to the effects of climate change.
