Tiarella polyphylla D.Don is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows from a short, slender rhizome. It produces numerous heart-shaped basal leaves, each borne on a petiole 2 to 12 cm (0.8 to 4.7 in) long. The flowering stem bears two or three additional smaller leaves. The individual flowers of this species are small, whitish, and have ovate sepals 1.5 mm (0.06 in) long; they do not produce petals. Tiarella polyphylla is an Asian species that ranges from the eastern Himalayas through China, East Asia, and Southeast Asia. In China, it grows in moist forests and shady wet locations at altitudes between 1,000 and 3,800 meters (3,300 to 12,500 ft).
