About Thysanozoon brocchii (Risso, 1818)
Scientific name: Thysanozoon brocchii (Risso, 1818), commonly called the carpet flatworm. These flatworms can reach a total length of 8 cm. They have pale bodies with pinkish frilled edges. Their upper surface is covered in short, finger-like protrusions called papillae, which come in shades of pink, caramel, and brown. There is a small pale protruding fold at the head of the flatworm. This species is found in waters off the South African coast, ranging from the Cape Peninsula to Port Elizabeth; it also occurs in the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. It is found in subtidal areas, and can be found at depths of at least 35 m underwater. These flatworms swim by making undulations with their body margins. The dorsal protrusions on their bodies help them take up oxygen and improve their camouflage.
