About Thysania zenobia Cramer

Scientific name: Thysania zenobia Cramer. Upperside: Antennae are setaceous and dark brown, the head matches this color. The thorax and abdomen are grey, with a tuft of black hairs positioned between the thorax and abdomen. The general overall color is grey, faintly tinted with red. The anterior wings have a notable irregular black bar that runs from the wing tips to the shoulders, crosses the thorax horizontally, and runs parallel to the anterior wing edges. On the middle of the anterior edge sits a triangular dark brown spot edged in black; closer to the body there is a smaller spot of the same shape and color. A second, narrower black line sits about half an inch below the first black bar, runs parallel to it, rises from the posterior edges, and extends across the wings almost to the external edges. The posterior wings have an irregular black bar that originates near the external corners, crosses the wings in a straight direction, and meets at the tip of the abdomen. Just above this bar, almost right against it, there is a very small, narrow wavy black line that runs parallel to the bar, but suddenly turns off toward its end and reaches the anterior edges. In addition to these markings, a number of lighter and darker shades are scattered across different parts of the wings. Underside: The palpi are reddish, with brown extremities. The tongue is spiral. The legs are dark brown, mottled with red. The breast, abdomen, and sides are red. The wings are greyish red, with black indented lines and bars that run parallel to the wing edges, and are arranged regularly one above another. The anterior wings have a kidney-bean-shaped black spot near their center, with a small round black spot a short distance closer to the body. The posterior wings also have a small black spot located about half an inch from the base. The wing margins are rather deeply scalloped. The wingspan measures 5+1⁄2 inches (140 mm).
