About Thyris fenestrella (Scopoli, 1763)

Thyris fenestrella (Scopoli, 1763) has a wingspan of 15–20 mm. The base color of its wings is grayish-dusky brown. The forewings have a number of orange dots along the front edge, and a distinct, slightly translucent whitish patch in the center of each forewing. These nearly transparent patches resemble small windows, which is the origin of the Latin species name fenestrella, meaning small window. Two of these window-like patches are also located in the center of each hindwing. The abdomen is blackish-brown, marked with faint white cross bands. Fully grown caterpillars reach a length of approximately 10 millimeters (0.39 inches). They are yellowish or olive green, with slightly translucent skin and many large black verrucae, and have a dark brown head. The pupae are stubby in shape and reddish brown. This species occurs in central and southern Europe, as well as Asia Minor, and is most common in southern Europe. These heat-loving moths live primarily in coastal areas, warm forest edges, sunny slopes with calcareous soil, scrub, and hedgerows where their host plants grow.
