About Thymus zygis L.
Thymus zygis L. has thin leaves that are approximately 8 millimeters long, and it produces white flowers. This thyme species grows best in sandy and loamy soils, and it can tolerate nutrient-poor conditions. It is also adaptable to a wide range of soil pH, from acidic to alkaline. It is very common across the southern half of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Thymus zygis is used as a food source. In Spain and Portugal, it is harvested from the wild to be used as an herb both when fresh and when dried. Its diverse aromatic properties make it a popular species for cultivation and for hybridization with other Thymus species. Even so, Thymus vulgaris is more commonly used as an herb than Thymus zygis.
