This species, Thorogobius ephippiatus (Lowe, 1839), can grow up to 13 centimetres (5.1 inches) in total length. It occurs along Atlantic coasts from the Skagerrak to Madeira, and its range extends into the Mediterranean. It lives on vertical rock faces that have crevices where it can hide, and it can occasionally be found in deep tide pools. This species occurs at depths between 6 and 40 metres (20 to 131 ft), and most individuals are found no deeper than 12 metres (39 ft).
