About Thienemannimyia barberi (Coquillett, 1902)

Thienemannimyia barberi (Coquillett, 1902) is a species of non-biting midge. It belongs to the subfamily Tanypodinae of the bloodworm family Chironomidae. This species is distributed across much of the western United States, and has also been recorded in Mexico. In terms of ecology, the immature stage of Thienemannimyia barberi lives in snags and undercut banks of sandy-bottomed rivers and perennial streams, while adult individuals have been collected at light sources near rivers. Compared to other species in the tribe Pentaneurini, available data indicates that Thienemannimyia barberi is more tolerant of relatively extreme environmental conditions, including high air temperatures, high altitude, high water hardness, and high pH.
