Thermopsis gracilis Howell is a rhizomatous perennial herb. It grows a hollow, fuzzy-haired stem that can reach up to 1 meter (3 feet) in height. Every leaf on this plant is made up of three leaflets, and also has leaflet-like stipules. Its inflorescence is a raceme that holds many bright yellow, pealike flowers; each flower measures 2 centimeters long or longer. The plant produces a leathery legume pod as its fruit, which contains the seeds.
