This species is Thelacantha brevispina (Doleschall, 1857). Females of this species reach a body length of approximately 6 to 10 millimetres (0.24 to 0.39 inches), while males grow to between 3 and 5 millimetres (0.12 to 0.20 inches) long. Females have six spines on their abdomens, each of which ends in a distinct sharp point. For most females, the upper surface of the abdomen has two large white spots; the rest of the abdominal surface is mottled with a pattern of black, brown, and white.
