About Tharsalea gorgon

Both male and female Tharsalea gorgon have whitish undersides to their wings marked with black spots, and reddish-orange spots on the hindwings near the margin. On the upper side of the wings, males have brown wings with a purple sheen, while females have brown wings marked with yellow patches and black spots. This butterfly occurs in foothill habitats, including chaparral, woodland, and canyon environments. Its host plant is Eriogonum nudum. Adult butterflies feed on the flowers of this host plant, as well as the flowers of many other species, including milkweed and Eriophyllum lanatum. This species produces one single brood per year, which is active between March and July.
