About Thamnophis cyrtopsis (Kennicott, 1860)
This species is the blackneck garter snake, with the scientific name Thamnophis cyrtopsis (Kennicott, 1860). Three subspecies of the blackneck garter snake are currently recognized. Of these three subspecies, descriptions are provided below for two: Thamnophis cyrtopsis cyrtopsis and Thamnophis cyrtopsis ocellatus. The blackneck garter snake has a geographic range that covers southeastern and central Arizona, parts of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Guatemala. This snake lives in desertscrub, grasslands, chaparral, and woodland environments, and is typically found near water.
