About Thamnochortus insignis Mast.

Thamnochortus insignis Mast. is a grass-like restio species belonging to the family Restionaceae. This species is endemic to Cape Province, South Africa. It naturally grows in dense stands in the southern Cape region around Albertinia. Currently, it can also be found growing along roadsides between Port Elizabeth and the Cedarberg; its seeds have spread to these areas via trucks that transport its thatching material. This restio is widely cultivated, primarily because it is useful as a thatching material, a use that is reflected in its name.
