About Teuchocnemis lituratus (Loew, 1863)

Teuchocnemis lituratus (Loew, 1863), commonly called the Black Spur Fly, is an uncommon syrphid fly species. Syrphid flies are also known as Hover Flies or Flower Flies, because adult individuals are frequently found hovering around flowers, where they feed on nectar and pollen. This species has been observed in the eastern half of North America. Adult Black Spur Flies measure between 10.5–15.4 mm (0.41–0.61 in) in length. They are primarily black, with a yellow scutellum; male individuals have a spike on their hind tibia. The larvae of this species have not been formally documented. Its confirmed distribution covers Canada and the United States.
