About Tetraena simplex (L.) Beier & Thulin

This species, currently classified as Tetraena simplex (L.) Beier & Thulin, was previously known as Zygophyllum simplex. It is a highly branched succulent, growing 8 to 20 cm tall. It produces fleshy, simple oblong-cylindric leaves. Its flowers have yellow petals, and it blooms from August through May. The species is distributed across West Asia and Africa, ranging east as far as India. Its most common habitats are shrub-steppes and deserts, and it grows best in salty conditions. In Qatar, it is known locally by the common names daa or hureim; hureim is also spelled harm, and it is a frequent plant found on Qatar’s rocky desert plains.
