About Tetraclita rubescens Nilsson-Cantell, 1931

Tetraclita rubescens, commonly called the pink volcano barnacle, is a species of sessile barnacle belonging to the family Tetraclitidae. This is a large barnacle species with a ruddy coloration, and its shell is made up of four plates. The base diameter of Tetraclita rubescens ranges from 20 to 50 millimeters, or 0.8 to 2.0 inches. This barnacle reproduces via copulation during each mating season, and produces two or three broods of offspring per season, with each brood containing several hundred nauplii. After release, the nauplii live pelagically for a few weeks. Individuals reach sexual maturity after two years, and can live up to fifteen years total. Tetraclita rubescens is found along the southwestern Pacific coast of North America.
