About Terpsiphone rufiventer (Swainson, 1837)

The red-bellied paradise flycatcher, with the scientific name Terpsiphone rufiventer, is also commonly called the black-headed paradise flycatcher. It is a medium-sized passerine bird that belongs to the monarch flycatcher family, and it is native to the intra-tropical forests of Africa. The male of this species measures approximately 17 cm (7 inches) in length. It has a black head, a predominantly chestnut-colored body, and tail streamers that are nearly twice as long as its body. Its colouring varies somewhat across its distribution range. Both females and juveniles do not have the elongated tail streamers that males possess, and their plumage is a duller shade of brown. This species is closely related to the African paradise flycatcher, and the two species can hybridise with each other.
