The scientific name of this fungus is Tephrocybe rancida (Fr.) Donk. Its cap ranges from 1 to 4 cm in diameter, with a convex to flattened shape and a distinct umbo. The cap color is grey to brown-grey, and young caps are covered in a whitish bloom. The cap surface becomes shiny when wet. The gills are free from the stem, crowded together, and grey in color. The stem measures 4โ€“8 cm long and 3โ€“7 mm in diameter, and matches the cap in color. The spores are white or cream, ellipsoid in shape, and measure 7โ€“8 ร— 3โ€“4.5 micrometers. This species grows from the ground, occurring as solitary individuals in deciduous woodland. Its growing season extends from early autumn to early winter. It is a rare species found in North America and Europe.
