About Tenthredo vespa Retzius, 1783
Tenthredo vespa, a sawfly species, can reach a body length of approximately 11–12 mm (0.43–0.47 in). Adults have a black head and black thorax. The first segment of their antennae is orange. Their abdomen has black and yellow bands resembling the markings of wasps, which is the origin of this species' name. Yellow bands typically appear on abdominal segments 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. The wings are pale brown, with a dark spot at each wing tip. Larvae are whitish or bluish, with triangular brown markings on their dorsal side. This species occurs across most of Europe, and prefers hedgerows and coastal meadows as habitat.
