About Tenodera angustipennis Saussure, 1869
Tenodera angustipennis Saussure, 1869 is a mantis species native to Asia and adjacent parts of Oceania. It was introduced to the eastern United States and has become established there. Tenodera angustipennis was first observed as early as 1921 in Aberdeen, Maryland, but this observation was not published in a scientific record until 1933.
The native range of this species includes China, Hawaii, India, Java, the Korean Peninsula, Ulleung-do, Jejudo, Taiwan, Vietnam, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima Island, and Okinawa Island. In the United States, its non-native range covers Delaware, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
This species typically lays its oothecae (egg cases) on shrub twigs and the stems of tall herbs. In field margins, however, Tenodera angustipennis appears to prefer laying oothecae on tree trunks and fence posts. In some regions, T. angustipennis is just as abundant as the related species T. sinensis.
