About Temnostoma alternans Loew, 1864

Temnostoma alternans (Loew, 1864), commonly called the Wasp-like falsehorn, is a common species of syrphid fly. It has been observed across the northern and central United States, and is widespread across Canada. Syrphid flies, also called hoverflies, can stay nearly motionless while in flight. Adult hoverflies are often called flower flies because they are commonly found on flowers, where they collect energy-giving nectar and protein-rich pollen. The larvae of this species burrow in moist decayed wood. Its confirmed distribution covers Canada and the United States.
