About Telestes souffia (Risso, 1827)

This species is a freshwater ray-finned fish commonly known as the souffia, Western riffle dace, telestes, vairone, or western vairone. It belongs to the family Leuciscidae, a group that includes daces, Eurasian minnows, and related fishes.

Telestes souffia occurs in Europe. Its range covers rivers that drain into the Mediterranean, as well as the Rhine and Danube catchments. More specifically, it can be found from rivers draining into the Gulf of Lion (including the Hérault and Rhône) east to the Var River that drains into the Ligurian Sea. It also lives in the Soča River, which drains into the Adriatic Sea and spans northeastern Italy and western Slovenia. Additionally, it is present in the upper Rhine and Danube catchments, ranging from Switzerland and Germany east to the Tisza drainage in Romania and Ukraine. This is a gregarious species that inhabits cool, flowing, well-oxygenated rivers and streams, and it avoids lowland stretches.
