About Tegula brunnea (R.A.Philippi, 1849)
The shell of Tegula brunnea ranges in size from 19 mm to 45 mm. This solid, imperforate shell has a conical shape, and its color can be russet-yellow, brown, orange, or deep crimson. The spire is conical, with deeply impressed sutures. There are approximately seven convex, smooth whorls that show faint oblique striations. Below the suture, the body whorl sometimes has faint undulations or folds. The base of the shell is depressed, with a deep concave center. The aperture is very oblique. The columella bears one or two teeth near its base. The umbilical callus is white, and the area where the umbilicus would be is deeply excavated. This species shows extreme variation in relative altitude and overall size. Tegula brunnea is found in the Pacific Ocean, along the coast from Oregon to the Santa Barbara Islands, California, USA.
