About Tauphaedusa tau (O.Boettger, 1877)

Tauphaedusa tau is a species of land snail in the subfamily Phaedusinae, family Clausiliidae. It was first described by Oskar Boettger in 1877 under the original name Clausilia tau. This species is viviparous. It occurs in Japan, China, and Taiwan. In Japan, individuals of this species are known to carry Riccardoella mites in their lungs, and also host trematodes belonging to the family Dicrocoeliidae. In Hawaii, these snails have been found to host the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis. If this parasite is transmitted to humans, it can cause eosinophilic meningitis, which leads to neurological damage and may result in death.
